Close Encounters of the Furry Kind.

If your dog won’t release the item willingly when you say your chosen command word, try this technique:

1. Press his flews (lips) against his teeth and gums while saying the command.

2. Remove the object from his mouth.

3. Give him a substitute object or a treat.

Be sure to praise. If he resists, you can add a little emphasis: Grasp his collar or collar tab, firmly tell him “Aah, aah,” and repeat the command.

Drop is one lesson that requires an A+. A dog who won’t give up his toys or bones or food is a potential biter and will challenge you in other sinister ways as he grows into those 65 pounds of muscle. Think Hulk Hogan with sharp teeth. (See Chapter 16 for more on problem behavior.)

There’s one more way to make your dog drop something in his mouth. Place your fingers inside either hind leg and press hard upwards into his abdominal area. For reasons known only to the dog and possibly the professional retriever trainer who taught me that one, it works. I don’t know if it enhances your alpha spot, but it surely convinces the dog you mean it. You may have to practice this one a few times to find the exact spot and the amount of pressure.
